Almaty is a good three-day base for pairing an easy city walk with a mountain day. This plan keeps the first and third days mostly in the city, then uses a city bus and cable car for Medeu and Shymbulak. It avoids a costly long-distance day tour and does not assume a fixed airfare, hotel rate or food budget.
Plan for the season: Medeu’s skating season usually runs from November into March or April, but opening dates, mountain access and weather can change. Check the rink and resort status before you travel, and bring a warm layer for the higher cable-car stations.
The Three-Day Plan
| Day | Plan | Keep costs down |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Panfilov Park, Ascension Cathedral, Green Bazaar and the pedestrian streets | Walk the compact centre and pay only for what you choose to eat or buy |
| 2 | Medeu dam and rink, then the Shymbulak cable car | Use city bus 12 from Dostyk Avenue; choose the cable-car ticket that matches your route |
| 3 | A slower city day: metro art stops, central parks, and Kok-Tobe if the weather is clear | Use the metro and public spaces; treat viewpoints and rides as optional extras |
Day 1: Walk the City Centre
Start at the Park of 28 Panfilov Guardsmen. The park and the wooden Ascension Cathedral sit together, so you can see both without paying for a transfer. The cathedral is an active place of worship; keep your visit respectful and check its current hours before going inside.
Continue to the nearby Ascension Cathedral, then walk toward the Green Bazaar for a low-commitment lunch stop. Browse first, compare prices, and buy only what you want to eat. Finish with a stroll along the pedestrian streets around Arbat and Panfilov Street. Check market hours on the day because they can vary.
Day 2: Medeu and Shymbulak
Take city bus 12 from Dostyk Avenue to Medeu, the mountain rink. The Almaty tourism office describes this as the usual public-transport route. If the dam stairs are open and conditions are safe, the 842-step climb gives you a view into the gorge without an attraction ticket. Allow about half a day for Medeu and Shymbulak.
From Medeu, continue by cable car to Shymbulak. The resort currently lists a round-trip ticket from 4,000 KZT; the precise ticket depends on the route and date. Its published cable-car hours are 09:00–19:00 for Medeu–Shymbulak, 09:00–17:00 for Combi-1 and 09:00–16:30 for Combi-2. Boarding closes before the lift itself, and hours or prices can change, so check the official ticket page before setting out.
Budget choice: You can enjoy the city bus ride, Medeu area and dam viewpoint without buying a ski pass. Take the cable car only if the views and mountain visit are worth the extra cost to you.
Day 3: A Slow City Day and Viewpoint
Keep the final day flexible. Visit the central metro stations around Almaly, Abay and Baikonur, take a park break, and leave time for a meal at the Green Bazaar or a neighbourhood café. If skies are clear and your budget allows, take the cable car from the Kazakhstan Hotel area to Kok-Tobe; the city tourism guide identifies this as the main route up. Check current service and fares before you go.
Do not squeeze Charyn Canyon, Kolsai or Big Almaty Lake into this three-day plan as a casual add-on. Almaty’s tourism office notes there is no public transport to those destinations; they need a separate car, day tour or longer trip.
Budget Notes: The Costs You Can Plan For
| Item | Current planning figure | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| City public transport | 120 KZT per ride | Current Almaty fare; use the ONAY system and recheck the fare before travel |
| Shymbulak cable car | From 4,000 KZT | Operator’s current starting price for a round trip; route and ticket type affect price |
| Panfilov Park and cathedral exterior | No ticket assumed | Check access and worship hours if you plan to enter the active cathedral |
| Flights, accommodation and meals | Not included | Prices vary by dates and booking; compare live options rather than relying on an old package total |
A single metro ride is currently 120 KZT; ONAY also states a 120 KZT fare for city transport. Four paid rides would therefore be 480 KZT at today’s fare. This is a transport example, not a full trip budget. The cable car, lodging, meals, airport transfers and any activities add to your spend.
Entry Rules for Indian Travellers
Indian citizens can currently visit Kazakhstan visa-free for up to 14 days per visit, with a maximum of 42 days in any 180-day period, for tourism, business or private visits. Carry a passport and confirm the latest entry conditions before booking.
Kazakhstan is introducing QazETA for visa-free travellers in phases. The rollout reaches Almaty International Airport on 1 January 2027; QazETA is scheduled to become mandatory for covered travellers from 1 July 2027. During the transition through 30 June 2027, not having QazETA alone is not grounds to refuse entry. The authorisation is free, must be applied for at least 72 hours before arrival when required, and does not extend the visa-free stay. See our full QazETA update and recheck the official rules close to your trip.
